Forget That. What About The Food Court?
-
It's a mixed blessing for mall owners: Major chains are trying to survive by creating dark stores. What are they? They're stores in malls converted to fulfillment centers for online orders and delivery. Take Macy's -- they've already converted a couple of mall locations to dark store status, stores where the public can't go in but merchandise is being shipped in and out. That's good for the landlords, because the rent's being paid. It's bad because it severely reduces foot traffic for the rest of the mall. But whether it's a department store or a grocery (Whole Foods and Kroger are doing it, too), it might be the wave of the future. (Motley Fool via USA Today)
