What Can I Get For A Mint Rookie Joe Shlabotnik?
-
The sale of a Mickey Mantle rookie card for $5.2 million seems odd, because while the buyer, a very rich collector, thinks he got a bargain (though it sold for $2.88 million in 2018), and I know that sports cards have become a big collector's business again, and, yes, scarcity, I would think low-tech baseball cards are a thing appealing mostly to Boomers, baseball itself appeals to an old crowd, and the number of people who actually remember Mickey Mantle is dwindling. (Yes, I'm old enough to have seen him play live on TV, but only as a hobbled shell of his former self with the crappy late '60s Yankees.) Anyway, are you as surprised that baseball cards can still draw that kind of money? (Los Angeles Times)
