The lockdowns and masks and sheltering did not stop COVID-19, although that was never the goal; the goal was to slow it down to let hospitals deal with the cases. But all the precautions had a side effect: they killed off this season's flu. Less personal interaction meant less flu spreading. We may not be past flu season, so caution is advised, and flu variants WILL show up again. Virologists say that the end result could be great -- whole flu strains dying off for good -- but could be awful -- mutant strains firing up or splitting from existing strains. But for now, the flu isn't making much headway this year. (The Atlantic)
