A study from actual scientists confirms that people quite literally don't know when to shut up. More precisely, people generally just don't know when it's time to stop talking and when to keep talking during conversations. Conversations, they say, almost never end when both of the conversants want them to end. We can't get the timing down, almost ever (about 2% ended to the satisfaction of both parties, 30% when only one of the two wanted it to end). You'd think humans would have worked this out by this stage of evolution. (Scientific American)
