Real Life Vs. Cable News (Again)
-
If you're pumping up the story that migrants are storming the border and "invading" the U.S., you should know that this is hardly true; there have been more people trying to cross illegally, but those at the border say that it's nowhere near the problem that the general pandemic shutdown of border crossings has been. And that's because of something not generally mentioned in discussions of the border: Cities on either side need people to cross the border. It's their economy. People cross the border to work, to shop, to do all sorts of things. If you don't live there, you imagine that it's just people looking to move to the other country that cross over. That's far from the truth, and cities like El Paso and Laredo desperately NEED border crossers to return. Even San Diego. But in a politically charged world, that message gets lost. (Washington Post)
