That's Gotta Violate Zoning Laws, Doesn't It? They Have Zoning Laws, Don't They?

It took years and the intervention of the TV show "Hoarders," but the L.A. police have finally begun a cleanup at a suburban house in the Valley where the owner allowed the property to become a junkyard. Technically, the owner allowed her son to use the property as a junkyard, and "junkyard" is putting it mildly. The place is a wreck, smack in the middle of an otherwise typical upper-middle-class suburban neighborhood in Granada Hills. You can see the mess on Google Maps, but it got much worse since then. It makes you wonder how or why someone could even do that, and why the police and city did nothing for years until pushed hard; the city claims that its hands are tied by the prospect of a lawsuit and it would cost more than they have, but people who do these cleanups for a living say otherwise. When does a property owner's right to do what they want with their property interfere with the neighbors' rights not to have vermin and people dumping trash next door? (KCBS-TV/Los Angeles)
