'Because It's There' Might Not Be Sufficient

You could always ask "why?" when discussing ultramarathons, but when 21 athletes die when a 62-mile race through the mountains was beset with freezing rain and high winds, the question is particularly apt. Why do people want to push that far beyond human limits, and why would they hold the race without heeding the weather report? I guess people who do ultramarathons will tell you that they can't live without pushing themselves to new extremes, but this was insane. (New York Times)
