Plus, They'll Never Get The Smell Of French Fry Grease Out Of Their Nostrils For Life

Here's a topic for which I don't have a link, because it was a friend's Facebook post and I can't find it now. Anyway, the posting asked people why some teens aren't taking summer jobs, and the answers (from followers who are his radio listeners) went along the lines of "they're lazy!" or "I worked for $5.25 an hour and I turned out great." But the original question was a little off. It shouldn't be "why aren't they," it's "why WOULD they?" Besides the lousy wages (you read about $15 offerings, but a lot of summer jobs are still at the minimum), what, exactly, is a summer job flipping burgers of lifeguarding teaching you? No, "work ethic" isn't enough. Is there a special benefit to a non-internship job doing something you don't intend to be your career? Does it teach you toughness, or is it indoctrination into a work world in which you will always work for someone else at inadequate pay doing something you don't really love? And why SHOULDN'T a teen demand a better wage for ANY job? When some wealthy Jersey Shore towns are whining that they had to raise lifeguard pay from $12 to $20/hour because nobody would even apply at $12, shouldn't they be asking why anyone in their right mind would take a dangerous job in which you take other people's lives as well as your own into your hands for $12 an hour? Anyway, there you go, a talk radio topic.
