Let Them Read Cake
-
The Point Reyes Light is a small weekly paper in Marin County with a big reputation -- it won a Pulitzer -- but its most recent owner had grand plans to make it over into a West Coast version of The New Yorker. He had no patience for local coverage or issues; he thought the paper should run long features on national and international issues. And, now that he's selling the paper, he's saying, "Sadly, West Marin did not want editorial excellence. ... They wanted a newspaper that would record their births, celebrate their accomplishments and habitually congratulate them on living here." He seems to think that this is a bad thing. On the contrary, people wanted their local paper to, you know, cover local things. He decided to give them what HE wanted, not what THEY wanted. And that's why he had to sell.
