Scientists think they know why people have those "near-death experiences": They think that it's the last surge of energy in a dying brain. They've observed the same flash of brain activity at the last second in patients who die as for patients who are resuscitated. So that "I saw the light" stuff might just be the brain firing off all synapses as the body's system shuts down for good. Not sure what you can do with that information other than thinking "hey, I'm only seeing this because I'm about to die" when you're, um, about to die.
