I'd Serve Anyone Who Pays, But That's Just My Capitalist Tendencies Showing
-
The proprietor of the Red and Black Cafe in Portland decided that he had to throw a cop out of the cafe because his presence "made people uncomfortable." See, it's a vegam cafe where your basic left-wing activists and homeless folk congregate, and they don't take kindly to police officers, even though the cop was chatting with an appreciative patron at the time of ejection. The cop didn't take it personally, but now it's a cause celebre. I'll just ask this: Why are the same people who are offended when Joey Vento puts up an "English Only" sign at Geno's cheesesteak joint in Philly the ones who would support this cafe's right not to serve cops? And vice versa: If you're supportive of a place not serving non-English speakers (which, incidentally, ISN'T the case at Geno's), can you complain when a place that serves activists refuses to serve a cop? Thanks to Bob Miller at KPAM/Portland for the link. (Oregonian)
