First, You Bring A Weed Whacker And A Broom
-
It's weird to read a story about a place you know pretty well when it shows the place in horrific neglect, but that's what I'm feeling when I read this piece about a historic Negro Leagues stadium left to rot in Paterson, NJ. The place, Hinchliffe Stadium, is -- was -- unbelievably cool, an ancient concrete bowl hard by a waterfall and home to Negro League ball, all sorts of semi-pro and exhibition baseball (my dad played there) and football, and the annual Eastside-Central/Kennedy high school football game, which my dad and I would go to in freezing weather -- I might still have a program from one of those. The place has always been in disrepair, and it's been closed for years, with weeds growing right through the concrete and artificial turf. It wouldn't take a lot to make it right, but the city -- a nightmare of a government -- can't get it together, even when handed money to do it. What a shame. (ESPN)
