You Can Check Out But You Can Never Leave

Apparently, it's a common thing in Asian stores that they establish their own "fines" for shoplifting; you get caught by the shopkeeper, they "detain" you until you pay a large amount for your release. Now, some stores in New York run by, and serving, Asians are doing the same thing, holding you against your will unless you pay $600 or so to be released. Not that I have sympathy for someone who really shoplifted, but in America, isn't holding someone like that, like, false imprisonment? (New York Times)
