Viacom sued YouTube because of all those Viacom-owned copyrighted clips that it said YouTube encouraged and didn't take down fast enough. YouTube moved for summary judgement, claiming Viacom had no case under the Digital Millenium Copyright Act's shield of user-generated websites from infringement cases as long as they take stuff down when notified.
