They Do Things A Little Different From Us

Australia has a female Prime Minister. It's a little alien to Americans, not the idea of a female leader (although we still haven't had one) but that the former PM, Kevin Rudd, quit before a Labor Party leadership election he figured to lose, allowing Julia Gillard to take over. Yes, the people didn't vote for her; it's a Parliamentary democracy, so it doesn't work that way. Anyway, she's the new PM, and Rudd goes down as only the third PM to be removed without an election (he'd been in office for all of two years). Oh, yeah, also beyond America's comprehension: She's not married, but has a partner. She has no kids, and she's 49. She was a secretary of a socialist group. And she wasn't born in Australia; she's Welsh. (Brisbane Herald Sun)
