The Kids Are Not All Right
-
Let's group all of these under the heading "Kids Gone Wild," or at least "Kids Gone With Limited Supervision": First, you probably already know of the now-infamous "Jessi Slaughter," the foul-mouthed seventh-grader who's locked in an Internet battle of videos and comments with all sorts of people, including the 4chan folks. All of that is less relevant than this: How does a seventh grader go unsupervised on the Net long enough to become an Internet celebrity? And how creepy is that site where she and others post their trash talk? Kids grow up too soon.
And then, there's the mother who's going to jail because of her son's chronic truancy. She says she can't handle him and needs help; the officials say she's been warned. Either way, is putting the mother in jail the best way to get him to go to class?
Batting third is the teen who was having a fun evening of "ding dong ditching," in which he and his friends took turns ringing some poor guy's doorbell late in the evening, then running. Unfortunately for him, the homeowner came out and caught him with a flying tackle. And now, he's bringing charges AGAINST THE HOMEOWNER. Like he didn't deserve to be tackled for annoying the hell out of the guy. The story's become all the rage on the Internet, too.
And, finally, here are parents who say they had no idea, since they were asleep, that their three-year-old daughter was wandering the streets. They blame the other kids. But neighbors say they see the kids wandering alone all the time, so you gotta wonder about these people. (ABC News; Naples Daily News, with thanks to Dave Elliott at WGUF/Naples-Ft.
