Does The 'Sh-t My Dad Says' Book Count?
-
The buzzwords this summer are the "summer slide," meaning the theory that kids who take the summer off forget what they learned the year before. It's being used to justify pushing for year-round classes (with year-round teacher salaries, of course). But a study says that the "slide," if there is one, can easily be countered simply by reading. That's right, if the kids read a few books over the summer, there's no "slide." They now want schools to provide free books, of course, but most towns, even poor ones, still have libraries.
