They'll Put A Statue Of Him Up In Chicago. At Your Expense, Naturally
-
Dead: Dan Rostenkowski, the very picture of a Chicago politician turned Washington power broker. He was House Ways and Means Committee chairman from 1981 through his loss in the Republican landslide of 1994, at which time everyone suddenly figured out that the guy was corrupt, something that usually accompanies discovering that someone's a Chicago politician. He had "ghost" workers on his payroll getting paid to do nothing, he used tax money to buy gifts for friends, and he did a year in prison; later, Clinton pardoned him. His defenders say what he did was penny-ante stuff that was fine in Chicago, no different than when you go over the speed limit a little, and times just changed. But what they overlook is that he was taking liberties with other people's money. (CNN)
