Winning Isn't Anything

Dodger fans already appalled by how the Divorcin' McCourts have run the team into the ground and plundered it for their personal monetary pleasure will continue to be angered when they find out that the money that could have been invested in free agents has been going instead to the McCourts in a simple yet irritating maneuver: The team pays rent to the McCourts. Specifically, the team pays rent to another McCourt company set up for the purpose of taking money out of the team and putting it where the McCourts could pocket it themselves rather than raise suspicion. We're talking $14 million this year, which is more than teams that actually DO pay rent to a landlord typically pay. By comparison, the Red Sox, who also own their own park, pay no rent; the White Sox pay $1.4 million, and the Brewers and Mariners pay $900,000. Why do they pay rent on property they own? The team's attorney says that fans should look the other way and focus on the team's on-field performance. Okay, then, they're in fourth place. (Los Angeles Times)
