From The Language That Gave You 'Schmuck,' 'Putz,' And 'Schlong'
-
Endangered: New York's only secular Yiddish bookstore. Okay, it's not even really a store, just a small space on the third floor of an office building, and it's open only by appointment two days a week, but it's the last place to buy non-religious books in Yiddish. Does that mean Yiddish is dying? Sort of, but not. See, secular use IS dying out, but the Hasidim, who are growing in number, speak it as their primary language. It would be a shame to see the language go away; my mom spoke Yiddish, and there's no more colorful language, you schmegegge you.
