Everyone's Dependent

One in six Americans -- that's 50 million people -- are in one or the other of the many government assistance programs like welfare, medicaid, food stamps, things like that. That's a huge number, up 17% since the start of the recession. And that's probably why thise programs will never be reformed, no matter how badly they need it. Too many people are dependent on those programs, or getting some benefit they won't give up. Meanwhile, costs are soaring, and the beneficiaries don't realize how much they, and others, are paying for those benefits. (USA Today)
