No More Portland Beavers, No More Crude Beaver Jokes
-
By the way, how is it that Portland, Oregon -- Portland! -- will be without pro baseball next year? The conversion of venerable PGE Park into a soccer-only stadium for the city's new MLS franchise means that the Beavers, the Triple-A Pacific Coast League team, have no stadium and will have to move, and the city couldn't get it together to get a new park built (and in 2010, who wants to pay for it?). Attempts to agree on a plan to tear down the old Memorial Coliseum and build the park there have gone nowhere so far. A city that size with no pro baseball at all? Maybe the answer is in how the Beavers, since returning in 2001, have had only three sellouts, including the last game. Maybe, even though the city's always on the short list for possible major league relocations, there just isn't that much interest there. Or maybe they want major league ball and won't settle for the next best thing. (The Oregonian)
