If you’re an on-air talent no doubt at some time you have been told, “the best show-prep is having a life”.
It’s been said so many times it almost feels like a cliché. It’s almost easy to dismiss.
There’s nothing wrong with the statement. In fact, it’s an important recommendation.
However, has anyone ever truly explained why?
I guess most people who have uttered those words don’t understand the science behind it. They say it because they instinctively believe it.
But there is science behind this instruction.
The study on creativity was able to conclude that what people create comes from what they see. Literally.
Researchers were able to prove that creative people see more material in the world around them than people with less creativity.
The most creative people pick up and dwell on information than others who are less creative miss.
The act of experiencing events and seeing life with your own eyes is correlated with creativity.
It feels like common sense; what you create depends on what you see.
Think about the value you get from traveling, trying new things and chatting with other people (especially those who think differently to us).
When we are doing things, and not the same things over and over, our inputs enrichen. Our brain is a sponge, and creativity explodes with diverse inputs.
The more information we see and take in the better our chances of making connections between those things.
Creativity, in its simplest form, is the act of fusing different things together in novel and surprising ways.
If you want to be a creative performer, then you must live an interesting life. You need to expose yourself to a colourful tapestry of inputs.
Creative people are open and curious. That fuels them to try more new things. To see more.
The best on-air performers all showcase high levels of creativity. It’s a trait observable in the best on-air talent.
So, next time someone says to you “the best show-prep is having a life”, you’ll now know why.
