1) I understand that your grandparents were recording artists as well ... with RCA?
My grandparents were signed to RCA for over 30 years. They performed and toured with Perry Como and Fred Waring. They did variety shows on television when it was only in black and white. My grandma is the reason I took piano lessons.
2) What inspired you to begin writing songs?
I didn't want to show emotion when I was young so I would write poetry to express myself. I was about 14 when I taught myself how to take my poems and put them into song format. Inspiration can come from anywhere at anytime. I'm always on call with a notebook in my purse for those creative moments.
3) What was the inspiration for "If I Were A Boy?"
I was going through my first true heartbreak when I wrote this song. But the initial inspiration was my craving for junk food. Me saying "If I were a boy..." led me to think about what I would do better if I were the man in the relationship. It was more of a therapy session ... which led to an amazing song, so I like to call it the best breakup ever!
4) How did that song find its way to Beyonce?
Actually, I'm not sure! But it's a pretty rad feeling to hear superstars like Beyonce and Reba singing my song.
5) What's it like interacting with a legend like Clive Davis?
It's been the best experience of my life! He has taught me so much. He has an amazing ear; it is obvious why he's the legend he is. I feel honored and empowered to know he believes in me.
6) We're looking forward to the release of your debut album on February. What's it called? Give us a feel for what we're going to hear.
I am still deciding on the name of the album, but you are going to hear my stories of love, lust, broken hearts and relationships. I have intimate, vulnerable ballads to fun, rocker jams.
7) How cool has it been to hear "Just A Guy" on the radio?
It's super-cool! The first time I heard it I thought I would be screaming and yelling out the window. But I actually just stared at the station and listened like I had never heard it before. It gets a little emotional because I have worked so hard to get where I am.
8) Who have been your major musical influences?
My first favorite song was "She Drives Me Crazy" by Fine Young Cannibals. Then my first CD I ever bought was "Tragic Kingdom" by No Doubt. I listened and dissected that album, as well as Alanis Morissette's "Jagged Little Pill." I also love the classics like Aerosmith, Led Zepplin, Janis Joplin, Blondie and Queen.
9) What artists or songs would we be surprised to find on your iPod?
I have a wide variety of music I listen to. I love the pop stuff, including one of my favorites to this day, Britney Spears. I also love Portishead and Sia for the more vibey music. And I'll always be a fan of Journey and anything rock 'n roll.
10) Can we expect to see you on tour anytime soon?
No tour scheduled yet, but I have high hopes for a lot of touring in 2011.
Bonus Questions
What ringtone do you have on your cell?
I don't actually... my phone is on vibrate. But some of my family and friends have my single "Just A Guy"... and I secretly love it :-)
