BRIEF CAREER SYNOPSIS:
KKBT/Los Angeles, KPWR/Los Angeles, KIIS/Los Angeles, KISV/Bakersfield, KBOS/Fresno, KSFM/Sacramento, KIKI/Honolulu then back to KSFM and also KMAX and KOVR-TV. I did sales at KWYD for about one year, starting in 2010. In 2011, I went on the air doing nights. In July 2012, I was named APD/MD and moved to afternoons. One year later, I moved to mornings at KWYD.
1. What got you into radio?
As a kid growing up in Los Angeles, I would be glued to the radio listening to On Air Personalities like The Baka Boyz, Dave Morales, Frank Lozano, Rick Dees, Tre Black, Theo, John London and The House Party. I was that prize pig; that caller where as soon as your heard my voice you knew, 'Oh, it's him again'. However, I always made sure I called up with a purpose, whether it was to rap, tell a joke, do an impersonation so I would always get put on the air. That short shot of adrenaline was unlike anything I ever experienced and I became a Radio Junkie. I literally still get that same shot on my 1st break of every show.
2. When you were a kid, what did you want to be when you grew up?
Micheal Jordan, I wanted to be like Mike.
3. You've jammed an awful lot into your radio career, so far. Are Chief Engineer and GM the only positions you haven't held in radio?
Yes, Chief Engineer and GM have eluded me. I think learning everything there is to know about the technical aspect would be awesome. I think I would lean a bit more towards the Chief Engineer role then GM. The engineers are the glue that holds the stations together. They're the unsung heroes! Quick shout to our amazing engineering crew here at KWYD, Ian Perry, Aaron Archuleta and Jared Ricker.
4. You're doing very well in Boise but what do you miss most about being away from California?
Everything! On the top is without a doubt family, friends and the ability to take short drives and be somewhere amazing life Lake Tahoe, San Francisco, Napa, and of course LA. Idaho feels almost like an iIsland. It takes 5 hours plus to get to Salt Lake City, 11 hours to Las Vegas, and 9 hours back to Sacramento. Not to mention, I miss the weather. I'm tropical and snow is not my idea of a great time.
5. What would probably surprise most people about Boise?
There is a great sense of community. People and businesses get behind certain events, charities and really try to make a difference. It is very clean, safe and inexpensive as far as cost of living.
6. What's your favorite song on the station right now?
Pharrell's 'Happy'. I'm a huge fan of Pharrell as a producer, artist, and fashionista. I'm also a huge fan of his band N.E.R.D. When this song comes on, I cannot help but get a bit more.....uhhh Happy!
7. Do you have much time for one of your other radio passions, production?
Yes, not as much time as I would like, though. Doing mornings along with programming takes a huge chunk out of my day. Plus, you add in remotes and daily client commitments and my time is spread thin. My afternoon guy, Vijay has been bugging me to get together and just write random bits, but I have to have some personal time or I will go crazy! So production/imaging/voice over has taken a back seat for the brief time being.
8. What do you like to do in your spare time?
When I do find this mystery thing called "Spare Time". I like to catch a movie, go on a road trip, or catch up on sleep. It seems that 3 am comes very quick when you do mornings.
9. If you could be on any TV reality show or game show, which would you want to be on?
If spiders did not exist or I could be guaranteed there would be none on location. I think I would want to give the show Naked & Afraid a shot. Every time I watch that show, my wife must pre-screen it so I know when there going to flash gigantic spiders on the screen. Also, when I watch it always amazes me what takes priority when they first get to the remote location. I consistently yell, well that was a dumb choice, or I bet that lizard tastes good. Not to mention if you complete the 21 day challenge you're something of a bad ass with proof.
10. I know you have a thing for tropical living and vacationing. What are some of your favorite spots?
I have been to some great places luckily like Hawaii, Puerto Rico, Dominican Republic, St. Lucia, Aruba, and Mexico. What continuously yanks at my heart and mind is Hawaii. Every time I step off the plane, I feel like I'm home. I have great memories there, good friends and favorite spots. Nothing to me can quite compare to Oahu and Kauai living. I'm literally thinking of selling a kidney to fund a move back. What's the going rate on a semi used pancreas?
Bonus Questions
If you had to eat one type of meal everyday for a month, what would it be?
I would, without a doubt, rock this Hawaiian dish called a Loco Moco. Scoop of white rice, topped with a hamburger patty, 2 eggs, and then smothered with brown gravy. Adds some Tabasco and it's ON!
Has your wife given you a 'celebrity pass'
Yes, she said I would be able to make sweet gorilla love with Salma Hayek.
