BRIEF CAREER SYNOPSIS:
Email: djbigbink@gmail.com
I started out as a mixer at KBFB/Dallas in early 2000 and I'm now the Operations Manager in Columbus, home of the National Champion, Ohio St. University Buckeyes.
I was born on the Southside of Chicago. I started to DJ block parties which really started the passion to DJ. After becoming the PD for the campus radio station at KALU at Langston University in Oklahoma, the passion for radio grew. I was a vital part of the team that helped take down KKDA/Dallas, I've won many broadcasting awards and I'm now the OM with two stations in Columbus, Power 1075 and Magic 1063.
One thing I'm trying to do here is pass along the things that I was taught to my team here in Columbus. I've got morning duties on WCKX as part of @binkandmisty in the morning, one of the few "local" morning shows that still exist. Now in radio, you have to be able to do more than three or four things because just being a personality is not going to get you to the next level. Those people are few and far between. You can reach me @djbigbink and at (614) 458 9509
1. What got you into radio?
Being the DJ at block parties at home when I was growing up. I was going through my dad's records as a kid and hanging on to memories of him playing records before he died. I always listened to WGCI/WBMX and WKKC and acted like I was on the air.
2. When you were a kid, what did you want to be when you grew up?
First, Evil Knievel, then Watler Payton and then a DJ.
3. Who gave you your nickname/on-air name?
My mom did. It comes from the "binky" that I had when I was a baby. She is the only one that can call me "Binky"!
4. You started in radio as a mixer. How much do you lean on that experience as a PD?
The "mixer mentalty" will always be in me and I use it every chance I get because I can get in front of trends and music before it really takes off. That gives my stations credibility and we become the source for my listeners to get credible information.
5. What would probably surprise most people about Columbus?
This is an excellent place to raise a family and there are awesome restaurants and great schools here.
6. If you weren't in radio, what do you think you'd be doing professionally?
I'd probably be a youth a counselor or teacher. Definitely a job that gives back to the community.
7. What do you like to do in your spare time?
I read about Black History. I raise my daughter and my son and I travel around the world. By the way, I just read Scarface's book, "Diary Of A Madman". A great read!
8. Who can you see being among the next superstars in Hip Hop and R&B?
Malachiae, Fetty Wap, K Camp, Tinashe and The Weeknd
9. Who were some of your radio mentors?
John Candelaria, Earl Boston, Jay Stevens, Colby Colb, Gary Spurgeon and Joe Soto.
10. What are your favorite songs on the radio?
"Classic" by Vedo and "Church" by BJ the Chicago Kid
Bonus Questions
If you had to eat one type of meal everyday for a month, what would it be?
