BRIEF CAREER SYNOPSIS:
Creating cultures and winning in radio since 1999! From Houston to Albuquerque, Los Angeles (Oxnard/IE), Dallas, Phoenix and worldwide on SiriusXM, the Crisco Kidd Block Party is a show built on great music, engaging content, relatable personalities and most importantly, serving the community.
1. What got you into radio?
Since I can remember, I've always LOVED radio - the jocks/DJs, music and being on the mic.
2. What did you dream of becoming when you were a kid?
I always KNEW this is what I wanted to do and HAD to do. I won my first prize from John Lander on 93Q, then a few years later, I visited Mix 96.5 on a Cub Scouts field trip. I couldn't believe I was actually in a radio station! In middle school, I attended the Hispanic Career Day, sat in a radio/tv panel, heard my bro G-Man speak about radio and Tejano music, and was even more convinced this is what I would do.
3. Any self-revelation you've seen during the pandemic?
For most, I think this made people realize all of the things they weren't and maybe still aren't doing professionally and personally. For myself, my station and my coworkers, we've been working non-stop. There was no break. So, it's been business as usual but we've made the necessary technological and safety adjustments. I will say, though, this period re-enforced my thoughts on never let others dictate your happiness and success. Don't stress on things and people you can't control and it's always better to use your life experience before depending on life hacks.
4. You ran for mayor in Phoenix in 2020. How did you do?
Well, I lost the election (which was expected) but, that was't the point of running.
5. What did the experience of the mayoral campaign mean to you?
My goal was to inspire at least ONE person to get involved at the local level, let people know that someone was willing to sacrifice their job to fight for them and show that if you really want to change things. We all have to do things we never thought we could do. And, for me, after reading countless messages and posts from hundreds of people, I won. WE WON.
6. Do you see a future for yourself in politics?
I'm not sure. During the campaign I made it a point to let Phoenix know that I'm not a politician just someone who was concerned about the future of the city fiscally and humanitarianly. BUT, I am a part of different conversations at different tables locally now and IF the people want me to represent them in the future, I would definitely step-up to the challenge. Whether serving the public in an official capacity or through my platforms, I will continue to be vocal and share opinions and views that will strengthen our community.
7. What would probably surprise most people about Phoenix?
Phoenix is the FIFTH largest city in America and growing faster than any city for the past three years. Put some respek on it! lol There is a TON of opportunity in all aspects of life here and I think people are finally noticing since I arrived in 2016 - including the local music scene. If you follow me on socials, you can see who I cosign.
8. If you weren't in radio, what do you think you'd be doing professionally?
Well, because of radio, I've been able to create other business opportunities. I'm a pretty successful realtor - @CloseWithCrisco, own the Famous Churros food truck, just helped launch a cryptocoin and NFT exchange with creamPYE, and, if the Lord is willing, will be moving into the education space by the end of 2021.
9. Got any advice for young radio talent?
Find your lane and stay in it. Be genuine. Don't let trends define who you are and what you do. Do the work your peers or people who want to be in your space aren't willing to do. And, please remember, just because someone is in a bigger market than you, does NOT make them better or more successful than you. Be the best in your market and professional and personal success will follow.
10. What do you want to do better, professionally, as you move through 2021?
Be UNDENIABLE. I want there to be no question, that myself and the show are the best when it comes to what we are doing on-air, on screens and in person - and, above all, we continue to have the ratings to back it.
Bonus Questions
What do you like to do in your spare time?
Now that I am a dad, any spare time I have goes to my son, my girl, my family and friends. But, I've always been a reader and this year I started the Crisco Kidd BOOK Party and have been sharing some great books that I've read or wanted to read.
Talk radio in your future?
I would LOVE to - let's see which network will take a chance on the show I want to take to that format!
