“Time Management!”-
BRIEF CAREER SYNOPSIS:
1996 started with KCAQ Oxnard/Ventura doing nights with Rico.
1999 to 2001 I was at KSEQ/Fresno-Visalia
2001 I got re-hired at KCAQ to do mornings.
2005 left KCAQ to launch KVYB/Oxnard-Ventura and do mornings and got fired in 2008. I was out of a job for about a year.
2009 I was re-hired at KCAQ to do mornings and I helped launch several stations (Q104.7-KQIE & Old School 95.9-KOCP.) I also did morning in Riverside/San Bernardino on KQIE and afternoons in Oxnard/Ventura on KOCP. Now I am the PD/MD for KCAQ and doing mornings.
1. What got you into radio?
The love for music. Back in the late 80’s I used to listen to KMYX 106 I believe they were out of Ojai, CA and on certain days with an antenna made out of wire hangers I would listen to KDAY out of Los Angeles. In the early 90’s when I heard the Baka Boy’s on KPWR the idea of radio sparked in my brain and once I heard Deez Krazy Kidz (Joey Boy & Johnny 5) doing nights on Power 106 I knew radio was for me! In 1996, my friend Armando “Armani” Amezcua introduced me to Rico who was doing nights at the time. That’s when we started doing nights and started the Rico & Mambo show.
2. What did you dream of becoming when you were a kid?
As a kid I wanted to be a professional soccer player but as I got older I wasn’t sure what I wanted as a career. I started DJing in my teens and stuck with it.
3. Pick up any bad habits during the pandemic?
No bad habits but I did eat a lot and got into drinking craft beers and whiskey. (Cheers)
4. What about new hobbies?
I wish I had the time. Any free time I have, I love spending it with my family.
5. How is the morning show evolving at Q?
This year we’ve had big changes. After doing the Rico and Mambo show in the market for almost 25 years, Rico decided to call it quits in April of 2021. These past couple of months have been crazy busy rebranding mornings for KCAQ and building a new team. It’s been a blessing to be a part of the Rico & Mambo brand for almost 25 years in the community I grew up in and to now start a new chapter with “Mambo In The Morning & The 805 Locals”.
6. You've taken on more programming responsibilities with the company and with KCAQ. Do you ever miss the days of focusing solely on the morning show?
I think I’ve always wanted to be involved more in all parts of radio. Ever since I got into radio, I always showed interest in other departments. I like being involved in creating and executing ideas.
7. If you weren't in radio, what do you think you'd be doing professionally?
Something in marketing, for sure.
8. Anything that you would like to do better as a programmer as we finish up 2021?
Time Management!
9. What have you missed promotionally since the pandemic started?
Any events with listeners! (Live broadcast, Concerts, Festivals, etc.)
10. While your COO, Brian Davis, has been your boss for many years, he was also your competitor for several years. What was the worst part about competing against him in the market?
Bear and I have always been friends. The competitive part was always fun for me. I think the worst part was creating great promotions and events against each other. It was tough to be on the top station (KCAQ) and leave and create something (KVYB) to compete against something I was a big part of.
Bonus Questions
If you could be on any TV reality show or game show, which would you want to be on?
I would create a “Radio Reality Show” and be on that.
You have to name a newborn son after a new rapper. What's it going to be?
Baby Keem
