Have an opinion? Add your comment below. What is the biggest difference for you between what you do on the show and what you do on stage?
My objective is the same for both the show and the stage. That objective is to bring humor, love, and honesty to the audience. The pace of a radio show is a lot quicker but there is not a dump button on the stage, you'll just get canceled.-
BRIEF CAREER SYNOPSIS:
Managed to grasp the wheel of this career and steer into a success. A multi-faceted media personality that has fused passion for making others laugh with an infectious personality, creating the perfect blend of humor and charm. A failed gang member has a no-holds-barred style of comedy and fuses in experiences of growing up a Chicano man in America. I've been in radio since 2015, starting off with my own night show on KKSS/Albuquerque. Now I'm on comedy stages around the country and I'm on the nationally syndicated Dana Cortez Show.
1. What did you dream of becoming when you were a kid?
I really just dreamt of becoming rich because going from poverty to low end middle class wasn't it. Football was a positive influence on my childhood, but those dreams were crushed on multiple occasions. I've always pursued attention seeking goals so at one point I even dreamt of becoming a politician.
2. What got you into radio?
The gift of gab is what got me into radio but my path was unique. Prior to radio, I was hosting YouTube interviews with different music artists. I landed an interview with Mac Miller. When I arrived at the venue for the interview, I met DJ Automatic who was playing at the concert. The bromance between myself and him was instant. A few months later he introduced me to Dana Cortez, and I've been a "radio guy" ever since.
3. As an air personality, what would you like to improve on?
Quicker client reads so I can help generate more bread for the network and for my stand-up comedy addiction.
4. How is your stand-up career doing?
My stand-up comedy EP "A Rat's Tale" debuted at #1 on the iTunes Comedy Charts, I have headlining gigs booked, and I'm no longer getting paid in free food, so it's going great.
5. What is the biggest difference for you between what you do on the show and what you do on stage?
My objective is the same for both the show and the stage. The objective is to bring humor, love, and honesty to the audience. The pace of a radio show is a lot quicker but there is not a dump button on the stage, you'll just get canceled.
6. Other than you, who should people be checking for on stage? Who's the undiscovered star of comedy?
Ken Flores, James Davis, Martin Armani, Concrete, Jon "Polar Bear" Gonzales, Joey Avery
7. If you weren't in entertainment, what do you think you'd be doing professionally?
That's tough to answer because I'm not a Plan B kind of guy unless it's over the counter. If I had to guess, I'd probably be running a very successful pyramid scheme. Nothing too illegal but maybe a few Herbalife Nutrition Shops.
8. Got any hobbies?
I go on romantic dates with women from time to time. I'm a radio dude so I tend to date more for leisure which is always good for content purposes and makes for exciting Saturdays. I play fantasy football but I'm so good it would be degrading to call it a hobby.
9. Dana's strength as the ringleader of the Dana Cortez Show?
Dana's capability to connect with her community is something that always stands out to me. There is a "it" factor when it comes to Dana's ability to make people care. She's a Spurs fan but I call her the "Steph Curry" of radio because of how she changed the game. Morning radio hasn't been the same since Dana Cortez became the first Latina with a syndicated radio show and that shake up was great for the industry.
10. Who were/are some of your mentors?
I've been blessed with a lot of mentors but the homies that come to mind are Rico Colindres, Crisco Kidd, Ben Romero, Steven Jones, Cipha Sounds, Mark Arias, Bootleg Kev, Ernie Martinez, Jaime Valenzuela, Jasmine Armstrong.
Bonus Questions
If you could be on any TV reality show or game show, which would you want to be on?
It's always been a dream of mine to host "What Would You Do?". The hidden camera show hosted by John Quiñones, people are confronted with everyday dilemmas, and then John gets to interview them about their decision making. I hope that opportunity presents itself one day but if not, I just want to stay off of Dateline.
