NAME:CED LOVERPOSITION:Promotions Director / PM Drive PersonalitySTATION:WRCL (Club 93-7)MARKET:FLINT, MICOMPANY:REGENT BROADCASTINGBORN:GREENVILLE, SCRAISED:GREENVILLE, SC
BRIEF CAREER SYNOPSIS:
Started out in Promotions/PT personality in 1996 at WJMZ/GREENVILLE, SC, then moved to WDAI/MYRTLE BEACH in 2001 to produce the morning show. I'm now the Promotions Director/PM driver at WRCL/FLINT since 2003.
1. What was your last non-Industry job?
I was in street sales, selling Kirby vacuums door-to-door. If I didn't make the sale, I would have to lug a 75lb. vacuum cleaner to the next house. Radio didn't sound as bad.
2. What got you interested in Radio?
Actually WJMZ. I started interning for fun. I realized how much that station was a part of the lives of GREENVILLE. One job could affect so many lives whether with information or through entertainment.
3. Has your experience in Radio been what you expected it to be?
Not really. I wasn't a radio-head growing up so I had no expectations. I did expect more diversity in the stations, relative to their location. I find a lot of homogenized stations in my travel...radio in Michigan sounds like radio in Georgia. Stations don't sound like the city from which they originate. I also expected the pay to be better....but then again I expected to not be fat and to be a sex symbol, but I digress. Can't have everything you want, right?
4. What's the highlight of your radio career to date?
My first book out-the-gate @ Club 93-7, I nearly doubled the PM Drive ratings. We jumped to #2 12+ and #1 18-34 (which I maintain now). I'm also proud to work for the best 3.5kw signal this side of the Mississippi. We actually have tied or beat the heritage Top 40 with our fringe signal in many demos.
5. What's your favorite part of your duties as air personality and Promotions Director? If you had to choose one over the other, which would it be?
Getting to come up with ideas in the backroom (sounds shady doesn't it), and bring them to life on air and get listeners excited over them. I don't think I could choose at this point, but my I have an Advertising degree from USC (University Of South Carolina) and I finish my MBA in Marketing this year...so guess were my loyalty lies?
6. Where do you see yourself in five years?
I thought they said the apocalypse was coming within 5 years? Either way I hope to be in a warmer climate and a larger market either doing PM Drive or Marketing Director for a cluster.
7. Who do you consider to be your mentor(s)?
I don't talk to all of them frequently, but the people who've played a big part of my career from a personality stand-point are MARV HANKSTON, STANLEY TOOLE, DOUG DAVIS, JEROLD JACKSON, KENYA CABINE. Promotionally BASIM BLUNT, MONIQUE McCOY and LIZA VAN HORN helped me develop my promotional ideology. Plus we have a great staff here at Club 93-7 that is passionate and hungry, which challenges me to exceed my previous successes.
8. It's midnight on SATURDAY night in Flint. Where do we go to find you?
Midnight on Saturday night would normally find me doing homework for my MBA program. Or I'll make the short drive down to Detroit to party. Right now Thursday and Friday nights are the BIG party nights in Flint.
9. In 2006, what area of your "game" do you want to improve?
The area of my "game" that needs improvement is part after I buy the girl a drink. My game is so weak I don't know what to say. Professionally, my goals are to continue to balance essentially two Full Time positions and conquer Selector. I know a lot, but I want to learn more.
10. You find a magic lamp and a genie grants you three wishes for your station...not you, personally. What are your three wishes?
To move our station's tower INSIDE the county or increase the power. There is only so much you can do with 3500 watts when it's outside your market.
A larger Part time budget to hire a promotions coordinator for me (oooops...I mean for the station) and pay our PT jocks more.
Two more Chevy Avalanches so we can do more on the streets.
Bonus Questions
BONUS . What's your dream market?
I love Houston and Tampa. Actually it's not really about the city for me. Most major cities in the South are great. I love Michigan, but I'm a southern boy at heart (minus the accent and the Confederate flag). Plus, I like to know that if we get 8 inches of snow....the city will shut the hell down.
