NAME:Drex/P.J.POSITION:PD/MorningsSTATION:WFFYCOMPANY:Qantum CommunicationsBORN:somewhere in GermanyRAISED:In the 313....Actually the suburbs of DETROIT
BRIEF CAREER SYNOPSIS:
I interned at 93.1 DRQ in DETROIT, MI (if you want to break into radio, be an intern and love it!).
MD/nights/ KZIA/CEDAR RAPIDS, IA
morning show WIOG/SAGINAW, MI
PDmornings WFFY/FORT WALTON BEACH, FL1. What was your last non-Industry job?
I am such a radio brat. I started DJ'ing weddings and bar mitzvahs when I was young and then went right into radio. I was fortunate to not work at a waffle house.
2. What got you interested in Radio?
When I was 18, I went to a bar where JAY TOWERS from DRQ (may it rest in peace) was broadcasting, and when he went live at midnight, he owned the place. I got bit.
3. What's been your biggest disappointment in Radio?
Coming across people with more talent in their finger than I have in my body, but they have poor attitudes, big heads and a bad work ethic.
4. What's the highlight of your radio career to date?
It had to be when I scored my first full time gig in IOWA. I looked back as I was driving East on I-80 and realized that getting up at 4 am as an intern actually paid off.
5. What's your favorite part of your duties as PD?
Seeing it all come together. Like with promotions...going from the promo meeting, to writing the script, to the execution on the air. It's satisfying.
6. Where do you see yourself in five years?
Sales, baby! I need some money. My GM, JERRY STEVENS says to me all of the time, "programmers make great sellers."
7. Who do you consider to be your mentor(s)?
BRENT CAREY and ERIC CHASE at TOWER 98.3 in TOLEDO. BRENT is the greatest personality manager and a promotional genius. He sees how its going to end before anyone thinks about how to start it. Also JAY TOWERS in DETROIT and ALEX TEAR now in PITTSBURGH.
8. What will surprise radio people about Fort Walton Beach?
I would put our mix DJs up against anyone in the country. These guys are good. Ask them why they are here, and they all tell you..."its the beach man, c'mon."
9. What area of your "game" do you want to improve?
Being in a small market I wear many hats. I really need help with time management. I never have enough time to get it done. As far as game...I got it, chicks flock...I'm in radio!
10. If you were to leave Radio today and you could choose any other occupation, what would it be?
I'd love to be doing marketing for a large corporation, PEPSI, the DETROIT TIGERS, or even a charity, CHILDRENS MIRACLE NETWORK. Like I said I love seeing it all come together.
Bonus Questions
Your VP/GM tells you that you've got an additional $50,000 in the programming budget for last two quarters of 2006. Where do you spend it?
50 G'S, DOES THAT MEAN I HAD 50 GRAND BEFORE THAT? DEFINATLY GET A FULL TIME PROMOTION DIRECTOR. WE ARE ON THE STREETS 6 DAYS AND NIGHTS A WEEK. THEN GIVE THE REST OF IT AWAY, I ENJOY DOING FUN PROMOTIONS LIKE THE FUGITIVE, BUT GIVING AWAY MONEY TO CALLER 9, ITS NICE.
What's your dream market?
DETROIT....DOM THEODORE, can you hear me? After that, CHARLESTON, SC.
