NAME:MamboPOSITION:PD/MD/Morning Show/JanitorMARKET:Oxnard/Ventura, CACOMPANY:Cumulus MediaBORN:Santa Paula, CARAISED:Santa Paula, CA
BRIEF CAREER SYNOPSIS:
I started my radio career at KCAQ in late 1996. I was a night show sidekick until late 1997. Got my own night show and got fired in 1999. I got hired in mid 1999 at KSEQ/FRESNO and fired in 2001. I got re-hired at KCAQ in 2001 and quit in 2004. In 2004, I helped launch KVYB and I've been here since.
1. What got you interested in Radio?
The love for music and listening to shows like THE BAKA BOYZ, DEEZ KRAZY KIDS (DA NUTZ). I used to stay up all weekend listening to POWER 106 in LOS ANGELES and KMYX 106 in VENTURA.
2. You have been in the market for some time, although across the street at Q. What was the hardest part about the move to The Vibe?
The hardest thing was leaving friends behind. Even though Radio is a competitive game you don't want to have to battle your friends.
3. You do the morning show and you are the PD at The Vibe. What do you do to have the energy and time to get it all done?
Wow! I ask myself that question everyday. I think when you have the love for something you really don't think about how much time or energy you put into it. Plus, I have a great team that loves what they do.
4. What's the highlight of your radio career to date?
Doing Mornings, Programming and getting the opportunity to launch a brand new station. I've always dreamed of being a part of a team that builds something that everyone is talking about.
5. You are taking on a well-entrenched competitor in KCAQ. What do you see as the biggest strength or advantage The Vibe has?
The big advantage I have is that I was a big part of KCAQ. I did music and Mornings for them.
6. What would an outsider find most surprising about the OXNARD-VENTURA market?
How close we are to LOS ANGELES and how different the music taste is. Of course, the Top 25 records are the same but you can't ignore what your market requests. Another thing is the high cost of living. People think we're crazy for what we pay out here.
7. Who do you consider to be your mentor(s)?
I have a lot of different people I look up to. I learn something from everyone in our company from the interns to The DICKEY brothers in ATLANTA. Some of the people I currently work with who I learn a lot from are MARK POLLITT, JIM HAYS, GAIL FURILLO and SCOTT (RHINO) TOLAND. Some of the people I give credit to for helping me get to where I'm at are BIG BEAR, JIMMY STEAL, RICO, J PHILLA and JOEY BOY.
8. What do you want for Christmas?
A blank check from my company.
9. What has been the most surprising thing about being a PD?
All the responsibilities that come with it and all decisions you have to make.
10. If you were to leave Radio today and you could choose any other occupation, what would it be?
I would be a stay-at-home dad and make my wifey go back to work.
Bonus Questions
Bonus #1. Who would you say is the best new artist of 2006 for Top 40/Rhythm-Crossover?
