Please outline your radio career so far: (station/date, station/date, etc.)
My very first radio job was at KSRO in SANTA ROSA. Then to KBOS/FRESNO, KBMB/SACRAMENTO, KYLD/SAN FRANCISCO, WQHT/NEW YORK...and finally back home to KYLD.
1) What got you into radio?
My Dad. On a whim, he attended COLUMBIA SCHOOL OF BROADCASTING as a change of pace from his construction business. He eventually became the PM Drive host at KSRO/SANTA ROSA. At the time I was "attending" school in CHICO. He said it was a lot of fun and that I could make a living doing it. (he obviously lied) So I came home, attended COLUMIBIA, and bong bong bong...here I am.
2) You worked with the morning show at HOT 97 in NEW YORK. How did you like living in NEW YORK?
I actually did not live in MANHATTAN. I lived in the NEWPORT area of JERSEY CITY. But, I loved living on the East coast. I really enjoyed the pace, the vibe and the people. The energy in NEW YORK CITY is amazing. But, I will have to say that the weather was tough to get used to....winter SUCKS!
3) You've recently returned to the West Coast and to programming. What made you come back?
It was really nothing more than the opportunity. I loved working with TRACY, EBRO, BARRY MAYO, MISS JONES, JOHN DIMICK, and the entire EMMIS family. But, the chance to come home and work with a close friend in DENNIS MARTINEZ and to further my radio education under MICHAEL MARTIN was too much to turn down
4) What's the best part of being back in the Bay Area?
I have lived in many different cities...and in my opinion, there is not a better place to call home than the SAN FRANCISCO Bay Area.
5) A freak gravitational shift has added three hours to everyday. What would you do with those extra three hours?
I would spend more time with the people that I love. We all work so damn hard that we often don't pay enough attention to the ones that care about us the most.
6) You've known CLEAR CHANNEL Reg. VP/Programming and KYLD PD DENNIS MARTINEZ for many years. Got any secrets you can share?
DENNIS likes to unwind with a quick "rub and tug" at the local massage parlor... he doesn't charge much either!
7) Who do you consider your mentor(s)?
MICHAEL NEWMAN, MARK ADAMS, STEVE SMITH, E. CURTIS JOHNSON, MICHAEL MARTIN
8) What would you say is the highlight of your work day at KYLD?
Coming to work in the morning. I used to dig ditches and paint houses for a living. Everyday that CLEAR CHANNEL allows me to work at WILD 94.9 is a blessed day.
9) Where do you go to get away from it all?
To be honest, I really enjoy the city. I don't get out of town much. There is so much to offer. On down time I'll do anything from a GIANTS game, a nice dinner on the town, or just hanging out in a local spot and enjoy a libation or two.
10) In a couple of sentences...what, if anything, is Radio missing right now?
That's a tough question. I almost don't feel qualified to answer. But, in MY opinion...I feel that there is a lack of passion, and it upsets me. Far too often, I hear things like "it's good enough"... or "it doesn't matter, it's overnights"... or "we used to do it"...or "CLEAR CHANNEL this, CLEAR CHANNEL that"... shut the F*%K up! We are so lucky to be in the business that we are in. If you don't like it...GET OUT
Bonus Questions
If you were to leave Radio and music today and you could choose any other occupation, what would it be?
Without question...I WILL own a bar.
