NAME:Your Boy QPOSITION:Production Director, MD/afternoonsSTATION:KSEQ Q97MARKET:FresnoCOMPANY:Buckley BroadcastingBORN:Oakland, CARAISED:Oakland, CA
Please outline your radio career so far: (station/date, station/date, etc.)
I started my career where most people would love to end their career at KYLD (WILD 94.9) in SAN FRANCISCO as a party crew guy working for free. I feel like I met and was trained by some of the best guys in the business. From there, I got an on-air opportunity in STOCKTON at KWIN, then a brief stop at KHTN/MODESTO-MERCED, and now I'm here at KSEQ/FRESNO
1) What was your last non-Industry job?
My last non-industry job was selling KIRBY vacuums door to door. (I can show you a free demonstration...you don't have to buy anything.)
2) What got you interested in Radio?
THE MARTIN LAWRENCE SHOW. It looked like he was having so much fun talking trash to people and I figured I could do that
3) What's been your biggest disappointment in Radio?
My biggest disappointment in radio has been the lack of passion I see in guys that just started the business. The old skool cats know what I mean.
4) What's the highlight of your radio career to date?
My biggest highlight has been the opportunity I have had here at KSEQ to be me on the air, and to grow and have major responsibilities. Becoming music director was a goal that I've pushed for, for along time. ALEXA SMITH, my PD, trusts me with that responsibility.
5) What's your favorite part of your duties as MD/air personality? If you had to choose one over the other, which would it be?
My favorite part of being an MD is knowing that my opinion of what is played on the radio station is very important, and knowing I'm playing a major part in the success of the radio station. As far as being on the air, I love the fact that I can be myself and have my own style and sound and my personality is accepted. I have to be an air-personality, that's what I got in the business for.
6) Where do you see yourself in five years?
In five years, I just hope to be a respected personality, MD or APD or whatever position I am needed at the most.
7) Who do you consider to be your mentor(s)?
It's a long list but I'll make it short, my dogs that originally took me in, VICTOR ZARAGOZA, STRAWBERRY, BIG VON, JAZZY JIM, SAM DIGGEDY, TOMMY DEL RIO, RENEE ROBERTS, most recently my current PD ALEXA SMITH, HOODRAT MIGUEL, ERIC THE LATIN KID, ERIC SEAN, and I learn stuff from people everyday.
8) Outside of the music Q97 plays...what is in your CD player?
I don't think my CD player works.
9) As we wind down 2005, what area of your "game" do you want to improve?
My ability to make people around me better, I want to create the passion that I have in others like all my mentors have done for me
10) If you were to leave Radio today and you could choose any other occupation, what would it be?
I'd want to be a hype man for a rap act, or one of the fifty guys jumping around on stage at a rap concert. I'd better stick to radio.
