WIBT/Charlotte as APD/MD/air personality from 2007-Current1. What was your last non-Industry job?
My first job was in the industry... let me think.... I managed to juggle a job at Abercrombie And Fitch in a New Jersey mall while working fulltime in radio.
2. Why Radio?
The local news stations ran a special on local night jocks. After watching that, I was hooked. The last night jock on that special, three years later when he was PD, gave me my first shot on-air!
3. You're not a Charlotte native, are you? How did you end up in Charlotte?
Nope, born and raised in the northeast! Coming to Charlotte was an interesting chain of events. I was flying into Charlotte for a layover... Heading back to VA from vacation. I remember sitting in Charlotte-Douglas thinking how I would love to live in this city! Less than a week later my name got passed down to Rob Wagman for his opening at WIBT. The rest is history! I've been here since June 2007 and still loving it!
4. Did you take some time adjusting to the Southern pace?
I'm protected by the melting pot that is Charlotte. There are a lot of transplants here so the pace isn't that slow.
5. What's been the biggest adjustment since stepping into the APD/MD chair at The Beat?
This time around it's a little different. Maintain a good relationship with our sales crew and brainstorming for promotional ideas and, of course, keeping the relationship and communications open with the labels! Needless to say, day to day, it's busy in this office but wouldn't want it any other way!
6. Everyone is wearing multiple hats in the business now. One of your hats is "MD" at WIBT. What other hats are you wearing?
We are all doing a lot more than before. On top of being the Assistant Program Director and Music Director I'm also on air for the Beat and a few other stations through-out the company. I'm responsible for scheduling music, scheduling board ops for the building, loading syndication, and producing Seacrest. I also work for PREMIERE RADIO NETWORK as a Music Director for the John Boy and Billy radio network...
7. Where do you find inspiration outside of radio?
Everywhere else! Anything outside of this building can turn into a thought for a topic or some type of show/web prep. What is the "buzz" today? What are people, better yet, what is your audience talking about?
8. What do you think is your biggest asset you bring to the APD/MD gig?
Knowing how to use the technology we have to make the radio station run smooth and sound incredible! Also, using it to make one task easier allowing me to dive into another task that needs more attention.
9. What's your favorite thing about Charlotte?
I love the fact that it is always growing. Uptown, even within the 2 years of being here, has new clubs, bars, and restaurants.
10. What secret about you may surprise even your close friends?
I really hate driving! I spent a lot of time driving from market to market when I was younger that... 2 cars over 100,000 miles each! Now it's safe to say I'm over it.
Bonus Questions
Hypothetically...you're getting married on Saturday. What singer or group would you like to perform at your reception?
Hmm a "getting married" question? Nevermind, long story. Having Lifehouse perform "You and Me" or "Hanging By A Moment" live wouldn't be a bad thing?? lol
