BRIEF CAREER SYNOPSIS:
Started in college doing a small campus only station WXIN with a buddy. After that worked with various other college station WBRU, WDOM and did worked for Skippy Whites for years. Did clubs for years and that's what got the attention of my former PD Jerry McKenna at WWKX. He brought me in to do a weekly hip hop mix show and from there I had to sacrifice a lot but at the end of that run I was the PD. I don't know why but I caught the attention of Steve Salhany, OM of the CBS cluster in Hartford and he sent the boys down to get me and twisted my arm to take the job. Oh yeah and you're doing mornings too. lol
1. You've been doing mornings for years now. When do you wake up on the weekend?
I find myself waking up at around 6:00am and then laughing at the clock as I go back to sleep.
2. What got you into radio to begin with?
I think it was the affect that I was able to see I had on people just by doing clubs. It's funny how you can become a part of someone's day everyday. Like coffee, doughnut and me. It's great to affect so many people in so many ways. It's a huge responsibility but if done the right way the reward could be something worth more than money.
3. In addition to being PD, you host the morning show. What's your favorite aspect of being on-air?
Getting to know all the listeners and realizing that can convince the listeners it doesn't matter if your white black green or whatever. We all go thru the same things. Me and my co-host, Nancy Barrow, try to break down so many stereotypes that people have about hip hop every day and it's fun but at the same time it's educating some people who might still be stuck in time.
4. Do you have a favorite vacation destination? What makes it special to you?
Wow my favorite place is a place that I've never been...China. I'm just curious about the culture.
5. I'm not sure what people around the country think when they hear "Hartford". What is the first thing that comes to mind when you're asked to describe Hartford?
It's not as wack as you may think. So what we don't have a pro football team. So what we don't have an NBA franchise. So what the city shuts down at 6:00 pm. We got Hot 93.7! Hartford is like any other city with its nice areas and its bad areas with a lot of things to do in the city. I love the fact that I'm close to New York and Boston.
6. What would you say is the last hit record that got it's start in your mix shows?
Snoop Dogg - I Wanna Rock
7. Who do you consider your mentors?
Jerry McKenna for seeing something in me and Steve Salhany.
8. If you could add one fulltime staffer to your crew...what position would you create?
An Internet specialist just for WZMX.
9. Got any closet musical passions?
I still have my mp3 and my keyboard in the basement set up just waiting for me to fire 'em up. I use to produce music when I was younger.
10. Hypothetical question...Your best friend is getting married and you are planning and hosting his bachelor party. You have an unlimited budget and NO ONE can turn down your request. Who would you hire to strip and do a lap dance at his bachelor party?
Create a time machine and bring back Vanity from Vanity 6 and then tell her that I was the groom.
Bonus Questions
Which new artists do you expect to still be playing in five years?
That's a hard one because the labels don't develop these artist to be here for longer than a single. Can I get away with Keyshia Cole?
Shrimp or steak?
Steak, of course.
