BRIEF CAREER SYNOPSIS:
Started out as a stand-up comic; after a couple of years on the road and hanging out as a third wheel on a local morning show, I was offered a full-time gig. Ten years later I went into television as an on-air talent and producer, then later became Ops Manager. Worked as a freelancer for a few years then ran an AV Dept for a conference center. I got back into radio five years ago.
1. How did you become interested in radio?
It always seemed like a lot of fun.
2. Tell us about the unique musical mix of WVMP.
It’s pretty wide. Our programing was a collaborative effort for quite some time. We are very self-aware of our geography. Being in the mountains of Virginia, we are able to showcase music of the region without hitting you over the head with it. While we wish to be stewards of that heritage, we also know that we are in the entertainment business.
3. What new artists are you most excited about?
Rag N Bone Man, Barns Courtney, Johnnyswim, Angel Olsen and Mondo Cozmo.
4. How would you describe the “vibe” or personality of the station?
Ever evolving, we will NOT yell at you.
5. How is the station’s signal reach to the market you cover?
We are in one of those markets that cover multiple cities and chose to only cover the “local one.” The other city is over 50 miles away.
6. Tell us about the community building activities you have initiated with the station over the past few years.
“Building Community” is our slogan. We have an extreme focus on local businesses and do what we can to help. We are one of if not the only locally owned commercial FM station in the valley. Buy Local campaigns, Community Spotlights twice a week, open-door policy to local government, arts programs and nonprofits. This extends to our local music as well with a series of in-studio segments we call “Studio 101” in support of the various venues in town. These were all in place before I arrived.
7. Your social media presence?
Moderate.
8. What do you feel is the most important issue facing radio today?
Relevance.
9. What advice would give new people just coming into radio for the first time?
Become as tech savvy as you can, actually listen to what your listeners say, and don’t take yourself too seriously.
10. PLEASE COMPLETE: I can’t make it through the day without ...
... Hugs!
