BRIEF CAREER SYNOPSIS:
This is my first job in radio! I started out as a part-time assistant doing general stuff around the station and was eventually promoted to MD. After a year-and-a-half, I'm loving my job now more than ever.
1. How did you become interested in radio?
I moved to Laguna Beach in 2014 and was struck.
2. Tell us about how KXRN came into being?
KX 93.5 (KXRN-LP) was founded in October of 2012 in Laguna Beach, CA by Tyler Russell, a then-23-year-old graduate of Chapman University. Since then, Tyler, our staff, and more than 100 volunteers have been aiming to create radio that is meaningful, locally-oriented, and focused on music discovery.
3. What is the basic mission of the station?
Our mission is to connect Laguna Beach and worldwide listeners with an open-door policy that allows the exposure of "Generational Alt Rock" musicians, non-profits, and community causes.
4. What kind of market reach do you have?
110,000 persons
5. How would you describe the music on the station?
We call our format "Generational Alt Rock" - it's a mix of deep cuts from the '60s to the early 2000s with an emphasis on new indie/alt rock.
6. Most surprising record of the past 12 months?
Bon Iver's 22, A Million
7. What do you like best about your job?
Is it cheesy to say my coworkers? It's accurate, though - they're the bestest.
8. What is your biggest challenge at the station?
As an independent non-comm/non-profit, we have to work hard to fundraise and keep the lights on.
9. Where do you see yourself in five years?
Loving my job.
10. Fill in the blank: I can't make it through the day without ...
... I know coffee is the cliché answer but holds true for me.
