1. What’s the best advice you’ve ever been given?
Be patient with yourself. I think in a world and industry where we’re all in a race to get to the top or even get ‘somewhere’ - it’s easy to feel like you’re moving wrong but the race is yours and yours alone. Just keep moving till it makes sense.
I can always show you better than I can tell you’ - not everybody is going to see your vision or ‘get’ what you’re trying to do so sometimes it’s more effective to stand 10 toes in your work and let it be seen and felt, in action
2. Who would be your dream interview and why?
Probably Pharrell, Beyonce, Halle Berry, or DJ Drama. Skateboard P’s influence is so readily apparent in so many things I love so to get the chance to sit with him and share how important his work is and HOPEFULLY leave with some insight.
Beyonce, I just want to ask her about routines and efficiency as a creator and entertainer. Yes, she’s a fantastic artist but to be able to get in her brain and catch a glimpse into her mind. Ahh!
Halle Berry! I’m careful with this comparison but I’ve been told I resemble her, so I want to see in person if it’s true + get to know the beauty, talent, tenacity, and grace that is Ms. Berry
DJ Drama - man if you’re reading this, I just want to ask you a million mixtape questions. Please let me do it, thanks.
3. Where did your nickname come from?
Myspace!
4. How do you view being an on-air personality and a DJ?
I view it as a big responsibility. My job is never ‘one size fits all’ and I love that. From going to local schools to talking to rappers, I’m always kinda baffled at the intersection of things. I’m a facilitator of a lot of things.
5. Has it always been radio or were there some other professions you dreamed of having when you were a little kid?
Nearing the end of high school, I actually wanted to be an astronaut or a cryptozoologist. I didn’t want to spend my life in science class, but I have not loss the wonderment that is figuring out ‘what’s out there’ and where we fit in all of it. Now I just need enough money to do it!
6. What are you most proud of?
Mmmm hard to say. I’m proud of myself and my own tenacity. I don’t cheer for myself very often and a lot of my work is done with others in mind. I fight silent battles just like anyone, but I adapt the best I can. I don’t always get everything right but I’m always trying. I’m proud of my supporters and loved ones --the ones that get it, get it and the ones that don’t. There’s been so many days, shows, or times when I’ve had my face in my hands but have pulled it up all together because of the people I serve and their need for my success. They meet me where I’m at, even if that means being a light when I’m low. I’m proud of their love for me
7. Who have been some of your influencers and mentors?
My mom. I think I can simply say I do it all for her. I’m getting all teary eyed even thinking about it but I’ve always appreciated her ability to adapt to this ‘lifestyle’ for so many years, even if just trying to understand. She gave me grit, resilience. Overall, my parents didn’t sway or push me towards anything but happiness and strong foundations - but they embrace me in it and sacrificed it all to see me here. They just fostered critical thinking in me.
Angie Ange, Ahh my coach Ange. We have such a unique relationship and I have to admit, I don’t always see myself in those that came before me, but Ange has been incredibly intentional about supporting my growth. She offers me perspective and different ways of thinking, leaving me to form my own understandings.
Jay One, the man who put me in this show! He saw my value, he saw my work, he trusted my vision and I will always be super grateful for that. He changed so much, so quick and I’m inspired by even watching his own growth
8. How do you see your future evolving?
Hard to say. Since the start, I’ve been going with the flow so where it takes me whether behind a mic, table, crowd, or desk. I just wanna be happy and capable of giving.
9. Would you share one of your funnier moments in radio?
Uhhh the radio station is haunted, and I have compelling evidence to prove it. I also almost burned down the radio station, complete with firetrucks, whoops.
10. What frustrates you the most about the music and radio industries?
The secrecy of it all. It’s both helpful and the biggest hinderance. Our listeners only get so much about what goes into making a show or why things go the way they go. Sure, theater of the mind, but we gotta grow. Even to the question of “How do I get started in radio.” Some may offer you varying answers if one at all. Same with the people in the comments. It’s just noise and not always insulated with fact. If we were more forthcoming about what radio and the music industry needs to adapt and grow, we’d make so much more growth. There are so many young people with fresh, innovative, and REAL ideas that just need the chance. Old heads gotta open that space with honest, trust, wisdom, and willingness.
Bonus Questions
What’s a typical workday like for you?
I do the adult thing during the day (cook, shower, stretch, dance etc). Then I head into the studio with my work lunchbox in tow (I pack the BEST dinners), stretch on my yoga mat for a bit then get to yellin and talkin to the DMV!
Is there anything about you that would surprise those who think they know you?
I love to take naps and I actually don’t always like to talk
Would you explain your relationship with the music community in DC?
Funny enough, I’d have to ask the people to speak for me on this one. But I extend my platforms both on and off air to artists in hopes that they’ll see the value and worth in fostering genuine relationships.
