TITLE:PD/AfternoonsSTATION:WFXHMARKET:Savannah, GA/Hilton Head, SCCOMPANY:Adventure Radio (Triad)BORN:A Poor Black ChildRAISED:Northampton, MA (and Jewish...duh!)
BRIEF CAREER SYNOPSIS:
K-Rock, NY in 1998 (intern); WHMP/WLZX/ Springfield, MA in 1999-2002 (did every shift on air, eventually was Promotions Dir./nights), WXEG/Dayton, OH 2002-2007 (started as MD/Afternoons, then was APD/MD/Mornings for over 4 years).
1. What attracted you most to joining WFXH as PD?
The opportunity to program the station was attractive in itself. It's a GREAT sounding station that has a good winning formula that I think I can add to and make even more successful. Also, the staff here is absolutely AMAZING!! From the moment that I met them, I knew that I wanted to work with them every day.
2. Biggest surprise about Savannah/Hilton Head?
There are Jews here!
3. As a new PD, what is your biggest challenge?
Getting acclimated to new systems and figuring out my own management style. I have to learn Scott Studios; I have to learn all the quirks of our staff members and how to motivate them in the right ways.
4. What would an outsider find most surprising about Rock 106.1?
For a rock station, there is a lot of estrogen involved behind the scenes. We break all the stereotypes that "chicks don't rock!" And, we've got some great ears on in our programming department; we are going to be ahead of the curve on many things!
5. Give us a quick snap-shot of what WFXH is all about?
We rock. We have a lot of fun. We truly enjoy each other's company. It's the kind of close staff that I was lucky enough to have under Scott Laudani at LAZER, and the kind of place that we have a blast doing our jobs every day!
6. What's one thing that would surprise many people to learn about you?
There's a lot, probably. Being an ordained Rabbi, I have legally married people (my closest friend at WXEG, "Just Chad" and his wife). I am actually a smart, well read, nice Jewish boy, despite the tattoos and scary looks.
7. Of all the skills you have gained through the years, is there an area you'd like to improve?
I could be more organized. And I tend to get a nervous energy about me sometimes when I am learning new things. I just need to remember to take a deep breath and that EVERYTHING doesn't have to get done all at once.
8. What is the one truth that has held constant throughout your career?
If you are nice to people, they will be nice to you. If you are nice to your employees, they will bust their ass for you. And if you "just play the hits" and "keep it quick" on the air you will win.
9. What was your favorite station to listen to when you were a kid?
As a kid, I listened to WHMP. As a teen and in college I listened to WAAF. I always wanted to work there. In the early/mid-'90's that station really drew me into what great radio could be.
10. What are you going to miss most about Dayton?
The listeners of The Morning X with Boomer, and X-Fest with 25,000 crazy, great fans. It's an amazing concert and a testament to the fans of that station and their devotion to rock. They don't call it Dayton Rock City for...well, they SHOULD call it that.
Bonus Questions
If you were to leave radio today and you could choose any other occupation, what would it be?
My dream job is to be a Trophy Husband. I would be AMAZING at that!
