Please outline your radio career so far:
Went to Southern Utah University on acting scholarships and studied theater while working with the Utah Shakespearean Festival. I got into radio for the love of music and as a creative outlet that would allow me to live in the same town for more than 6 months at a time; stage actors are even more nomadic than radio people. I lived and LOVED radio in Southern Utah for 13 years and have now landed in my home state of AZ to host mornings on heritage country station KAFF on Route 66!
1) What was your first job in radio?
Changing reels on 95 FM Classic Rock in Cedar City, UT. (Reels were these big round things with tape wrapped around them that made music.)
Early influences? I grew up listening to W. Steven Martin on KNIX mornings in Phoenix with a little rock on the side courtesy of Dave Pratt, who ironically has now gone country on KMLE/PHOENIX. Wow!
2) Can you be a boss and also a friend to your employees?
NO, no, no, no, NO!
3) What do you like best about your job?
I love that I get to listen to new music and new artists for a living! I love that I get paid to do two things that I would do every day anyway, talking and listening to music.
4) What can we be doing with our station's web sites to better our stations as a whole?
More On-Air Web Cams! Who wouldn't want to witness the coffee spills on the console, the sales guy drop-ins and the papers flying during the daily "show-prep shuffle??!"
5) What do you plan to do differently in the next year regarding work and family?
More balance between the two, of course, that was my goal last year, too. Actually, I plan to yell at my kids more and at my co-host less.
6) Who's your favorite air/personality not on your air staff?
Randy Rose, on KREC in St. George, Utah. Funniest guy I know, and as talented in programming and on the air as he is funny.
7) If you could add any one full-time position to your budget, with no questions asked, what would it be?
Full time argument settler, microphone disinfector, call-screener (on and off air), client pacifier, manager-schmoozer, coffee-getter, desk organizer, ego-minimizer, prize-hog interceptor, talent developer, headphone-fixer, computer guru and programming genius with an ear for great music and a good attitude. Salary DOE.
8) In your opinion, what is the greatest song ever that never made it as a hit?
Why isn't Rockie Lynne's "More" higher on the charts? Can I still hope?? I love it.
9) Favorite artist that you have met?
Ronnie Milsap!!! Amazing live performer with a big heart and endless charisma!
10) Most surprising record of the past 12 months?
Ronnie Milsap's "You Don't Know My Love." When will everyone catch on? It's the much-needed, up-tempo, bright, catchy, fun, kind of "toe-tapper" that we see too few of. Come on, just add it already! (You know you want to.)
Bonus Questions
1) Do you read, everything? Books, Magazines, etc. Nothing? What's your favorite reading material?
At work it's everything entertainment-oriented that I can click on with my mouse. At home it's my kids' report cards, science fair project guidelines, and my 87-page phone bill.
2) Do you have Musical Guilty Pleasures?
Guns and Roses, John Denver, and the soundtrack from "The Best Little Whorehouse In Texas." Really.
