1. What was your first job in radio? Early influences?
I began as an intern filing traffic paperwork. I then became a production assistant to Bruce Vidal at Lite 92.7 (KMLT). I doubt that I would be where I am if it weren't for Doug Eldred (Metro), Brian Toohey (Salem), Cagle (WBTS), definitely Eric Sean (KEBT/KISV) and of course Pepper Daniels (KKJG). I also have lots of love for the first PD to hire me, one of the kindest men in radio, Ron Shapiro (KHHT).
2. Who do you feel is your competition in your market, and how do you go about competing with them?
Clear Channel recently flipped their failing Top 40 station to compete with our #1 Country station. They have Ace & Gary in the morning, who use to have a show here about a decade ago. We keep our show tight, make sure we hit our 8 songs an hour, our imaging and production aspect of the show could fly in any top rated market. The way we set ourselves apart from them is to be the complete opposite. Our show is built then executed. It's about the listeners and the music, not us.
3. What is your most memorable on-air moment?
I will never forget being on the air on September 11th. The station I worked at was the top floor of a bank building that was evacuated due to bomb threats. We stuck it out and took calls all afternoon.
4. What is your favorite show feature and what makes it successful?
I have two. I do the voice of a black reverend named Dr. Julius Colpepper. He talks pop culture and interacts with the show. He's inspired loosely by a friend of mine and I also do a character Phil Hendrie used to do. There's also a bit we do called, "Open Mic". We play a song, leave the mics open. Then we engage in some ridiculous activity that could never be done in a radio studio (i.e. full court basketball, cooking, etc). It fills the phone lines with both those who don't get it, and those who understand it, and love it.
5. Who do you look up to as a air/personality not at your station?
Rush Limbaugh, Whitney Allen, Pete and Joe, John and Ken, and Kurt Olsen. Two months ago, I would have also said Phil Hendrie, one of my favs! And now I can once again say Rick Dees!
6. If you were just starting out in radio toady, but you knew what you know now, would you continue forward?
Oh, I heard it all. I still went with it. And knowing the best is yet to come, I wouldn't have changed a thing.
7. If you could have any job outside the music business, what would it be?
I'd still love to pursue stand-up (not enough balls though), and television (have a face for radio though)
8. What is the most precious memory of your life so far?
Michael Jackson concert at Dodger Stadium in late '84. Also my wedding day 2 years ago.
9. What is it that motivates you to be 'All You Can Be?'
1/2 bottle of Jameson and a Lunchable (not the small ones, the big one with the desert and the Capri-Sun inside)
10. What is your favorite quote?
When I was a kid, I was homeless. But we lived in Canada, so dad just told me we were camping.
