So, I Can Go To The Newsstand And Take The Paper Without Paying, Too, Right?
-
It's the way of the Internet: A big website for a large, well-financed company wants people to write for it for free. It's how the Huffington Post became big, and now the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette is soliciting 750-word essays for a column that it will not pay for. I thought that after a few years, "exposure" as payment would go away for sites owned by for-profit, large organizations, but nope. And they'll surely get people -- not good, professional writers, but people -- taking the bait. That kills the market for professionals, but the writing business has been devaluing quality and skill for ages now. (Bitter? Maybe.) (Jim Romenesko)
