The Universal Language Of Protectionism
-
What happens when a government takes the idea of "official language" too far: In Quebec, some major American retail sites are blocked because they're not in French. That includes Williams-Sonoma, Urban Outfitters, and Club Monaco. What about English-speakers like those who live in Montreal's West Island area? Too bad, sorry, the Language Police at the Office Quebecoise de la Langue Francaise say French translation or no go. And the retailers are taking their ball and going home, posting "sorry" messages rather than translating their sites. They shouldn't have to translate anything any more than the U.S. should make French-language sites post in English. Which they shouldn't do. You want translation, use Google Translate. (CTV News)
