Not In Kansas... Er, Oregon Anymore

Did you know that Adderal is not legal in Japan? Neither did I, but it is, and an American in Japan to teach is now in jail and may face smuggling charges after her mother sent her a three-month supply of Adderal from back home in Oregon. Mom's a doctor, the stuff was legally prescribed and not a danger to anyone, but Japan's laws are... unusual. And they can hold you for almost a month without charges, which, it appears, they're doing in this case. You'd think that this could be straightened out with a phone call -- it was an honest mistake, not a smuggling attempt, and who knew the stuff was illegal there? -- but it's also a reminder that when you go overseas, what's legal at home may not be legal where you're going.
