Welcome To McDonald's, Mr. Murrow. Here's A Mop, Get To Work
-
My local papers won Pulitzers this year. The L.A. Times won two, and even the Daily Breeze, a paper of which I sometimes make fun as thin, poorly executed, and filled with syndicated, non-local stuff you can get everywhere else, won a deserved honor for its work on a story about a local school superintendent who pulled down a ridiculous salary and benefits despite running a small district with the lowest test scores in the county. But that's not why we're here. No, it's because one of the reporters on that story isn't in news anymore. He's a P.R. person (for the Shoah Foundation, where my wife and I both once worked). Why? Because he couldn't afford the rents around here on a reporter's salary. When a reporter needs to quit and take a job with a NON-PROFIT to make ends meet, you know the news business is in trouble.
