And We'll Fall For It Again, Over And Over, Because We Always Do

This article undersells the point: L.A. and California taxpayers paid $930 million for phase I of the light rail from downtown to Culver City, with the primary -- really, the ONLY -- selling point being that it would reduce congestion on the roads. Guess what? It didn't. They're trying to sell us on the idea that it was good because it got a few more people riding mass transit, but SO F'ING WHAT? Who wants to pay a billion dollars for a hundred thousand people OUT OF 11 MILLION getting to ride a train that, incidentally, blocks traffic at times on local roads around USC? Mass transit projects have to be considered carefully; it's one thing when you know the area NEEDS a train to the airport, or a train that serves a particular purpose. But when they claim it's going to convert millions of people from driving to riding, they are lying, and they know it. (Los Angeles Times)
