He Wasn't A Very Good President, Either, If We Need Another Reason
-
Does it seem that college students are coming up with more stuff over which to protest than at any time since the late '60s? At Princeton, students are staging a sit-in demanding that the school remove the name of prominent alum Woodrow Wilson from everything. See, Wilson was, inarguably, a segregationist. And like with John Calhoun and Christopher Columbus and other historical figures generating controversy after the fact, the question is, do we remove names of historical figures from schools and other honors because of their failings as humans 100 years ago or more? Do we need to take them in the context of their times? On the other hand, would you say that about, say, Robert E. Lee? What misdeeds should disqualify a name from being on a school?
