You would think that there would be no controversy over declaring John Wayne Day in California for the Duke's birthday, but because this is California and it's 2016, it became a major controversy and the Assembly ended up not approving the proclamation. Why? Because he gave an interview in 1970 that included inarguably racist comments, and because he was in movies in which Native Americans were killed. The former, okay, he had some, um, "interesting" opinions (which read as crude paternalism towards blacks), but the latter is a stretch- he was an actor, not a screenwriter or an actual killer. Still, it's another case of how 2016 attitudes are rewriting history. (Sacramento Bee)
