You'd Think Technology Wouldn't Make Things Even Worse
-
Lately, there's been so much debate over "privilege" and racism and I think some people don't realize the kind of things some people have to endure. Take black people with identifiably "black names" trying to use Airbnb and finding that they get rejected when they try to rent, but accepted if they try a fake "white" profile. People shouldn't have to deal with being rejected for something as innocuous as a vacation rental just because of the color of their skin. It's 2016, and this still happens. There are laws against this discrimination, but it happens (yes, there's a suit pending). But when you hear someone complain about dealing with societal racism, this kind of thing is what they're talking about. It's not someone yelling a slur at them, it's having things closed off to you that aren't closed off to others. Or, in some cases, neighbors calling the cops on you because you're using an Airbnb rental and they think you're a burglar. (New York Times)
